All Souls Church, Unitarian Universalist was born out of a determination
on the part of Unitarian Universalists in the North Carolina Research Triangle area
to act decisively on a denomination-wide commitment to diversity and racial inclusiveness.
This commitment is in accordance with the UUA’s stated commitment to
be inclusive of all people "without regard to race, color, sex, disability, affectional
or sexual orientation, age or national origin and without requiring adherence to
any particular interpretation of religion or to any particular religious belief
or creed."
The opening of All Souls Church, Unitarian Universalist in Durham marks
a major step in realizing this vision.
In February 1996, local Unitarian Universalists met as the organizing
committee. They served as the representatives of the Triangle UU churches.
The name—All Souls Church Unitarian Universalist—was adopted in December
1996, and Reverend Chester McCall
was appointed organizing and founding minister in December, 1997.
